Shingle Installation Tips

How to Finish the Top Edge of a Shed Roof

Shingle installation follows the same principles when dealing with any row of shingles, this includes both three-tab and architectural shingles. However, there are some key differences you need to know. Here is how to shingle the top edge of a shed roof:

  • For the final row, you will need to cut shingles into strips

  • Make sure that the strips are wide enough to cover the nails

  • Install your strips

  • Apply a sealant over all the exposed nails on the last strip

  • Use more sealant along the top edge of the shingle strips.

Below is how to install the last row on a typical shed roof. This method will ensure that your shed remains completely weatherproof.

Tools and Materials

  • 1 ¼” galvanized roofing nails

  • Shingles that are cut into strips

  • A roofing utility blade

  • A hammer

Your last course of shingles must come as close to the top as possible, and even if you have any overlap, that is fine. You will need to use your utility knife to trim the edge so they are flush to the top edge of your roof. If the adhesive strip of the shingles goes beyond the top edge, then do not install another row.

Cut your shingles into strips. Each strip needs to be wide enough that, when placed along the top edge of your roof, it will hide the nails of the previous course.

When you get to the other edge, you will be met with a strip that has exposed nails. Nail the shingle using 4 nails, two should be placed in the adhesive strip, while the other 2 should be placed at either corner.

To cover each nail head, use bitumen-based roofing cement, then trim the edges on the rake and top edge so they side flush with the other shingles.
