Roof Shingles Are Not Lying Flat
The shingles on your roof have two purposes, which are to give your roof a finished look and create a protective seal. However, lumpy, bumpy, or curling shingles that don’t sit flat can be somewhat problematic; however, don’t call out a roofer yet. The extent of the problem will depend on various factors, such as the age of your roof, the exterior temperature, and the condition of the roof. In some cases, the shingles will often fix themselves, but in other cases, expensive repairs may be needed, or, worst-case scenario, a total shingle installation.
New Shingles Not Sealing
Standard asphalt shingles come with an adhesive strip that will often soften during warm weather, especially when the scorching sun’s rays bake the roof. When shingles heat up, they start to become more flexible and the adhesive will bond the shingles back in place. Before new shingles can seal down, they will look slightly lumpy and uneven; however, once the roof is hot enough, they will begin to soften, flatten and create a permanent seal.
Multiple Layered Roofs
Most communities come with their own set of building codes. That will stop both homeowners and roofers from installing more than 2 layers of shingles. It is better, in the long run, to remove the old layer of shingles before putting on the new layer. However, tear-offs can increase the cost of reroofing projects, so many homeowners choose to install new shingles over the old ones. Once the new layer seals, the new shingles will begin to conform to the configuration of the old roof, which will include all the bumps and dips. While this is not attractive, as long as the new layer bonds, it will continue to protect the roof underneath.
